Program Outline
The Live-in Caregiver Certificate Program is designed to teach the skills needed to be able to work as a caregiver in Canada, including language and cultural skills necessary to manage a Canadian home. With this certification you will be qualified to provide personal care and supervision to a child or an adult with difficulties maintaining the activities of daily living. This program also meets the training requirements of Canadian immigration for application for a Live-in Caregiver Visa.

The Live-in Caregiver Program consists of four components:

· English Language Training (ESL)

· Personal Support Worker Diploma

· Canadian Cultural Awareness

The Internship

The Program begins with English Language Training so that you can communicate effectively with your client and as a health care professional. CCS’s ESL is through the Rosetta Stone computer mediated learning.  You will learn phrases and expressions specific to the health care industry.

Once you have the appropriate level of English, you will begin classes to become certified as a Personal Support Worker. Classroom lessons will focus on topics such as communication, nutrition, behavior, the needs of the elderly, and the study of common health problems and illnesses associated with long-term care. Laboratory sessions will cover specific health care tasks, body mechanics, lifts and transfers, as well as CPR and First Aid Courses.

Students also participate in a practicum that includes an intensive 3-week clinical practice, providing the student with hands-on experience in nursing homes, group homes, hospitals and/or long term care facilities. In addition to these 3-weeks, students from the Personal Support Worker Program are also assigned weekly on-the-job sessions at nursing or group homes and health-care facilities as part of their training. The total time spent on applied practicum is approximately 6 weeks.

The Canadian portion of the Program will help you to understand Canadian customs and culture well enough to run a Canadian household, as well as help you adapt smoothly to the Canadian way of life. You will learn to shop and cook appropriately as a Live-In Caregiver, learning to accommodate the nutritional and dietary requirements of your client. We will also help you understand the terms and conditions of employment as well as the rights you have as a Live-In Caregiver in Canada.

After 12 months of classroom study, the students receive 6 months of work experience. This is a key component to the program as it will enable you take what you have learned in the classroom and actually apply it in a practical, hands-on experience. This combination will give you the expertise necessary to succeed in your career as a Live-In Caregiver.
