The CAREGIVER/Personal Support Worker (CPSW) provides a range of health care services in a variety of settings: hospitals; long-term care facilities; in the community for home care providers; in adult day programs; supportive housing settings; group homes; hospitals; educational facilities and; private and public workplaces. The skills required combine nursing, social work and home arts. The CPSW may work in Child or Elder Care settings and Critical and Long-term Care facilities.
The National Association of Certified Caregivers/Personal Support Workers administers the third party exam and provides membership registration and on-going training for all graduates of the CPSW program.

Live-In Caregiver Certificate/Personal Support Worker Program Overview A Live-In Caregiver is someone who provides care to children, the elderly, or the disabled while living in their private household. We offer a high quality Live-in Caregiver Program which trains and prepares international students to meet all the requirements they need to qualify for employment as a Live-In Caregiver in Canada. Who the Program is for What you can expect to achieve · Certification as a Live In Caregiver, including Personal Support Worker, Dementia and Acute Care and First Aid certification · Become gainfully employed as a Live In Caregiver in Canada with the option of working after home care into the professional status of CPSW. Enjoy an increased quality of life Program Outline The Live-in Caregiver Program consists of four components: · English Language Training (ESL) · Personal Support Worker Diploma · Canadian Cultural Awareness The Internship The Program begins with English Language Training so that you can communicate effectively with your client and as a health care professional. CCS’s ESL is through the Rosetta Stone computer mediated learning. You will learn phrases and expressions specific to the health care industry. Once you have the appropriate level of English, you will begin classes to become certified as a Personal Support Worker. Classroom lessons will focus on topics such as communication, nutrition, behavior, the needs of the elderly, and the study of common health problems and illnesses associated with long-term care. Laboratory sessions will cover specific health care tasks, body mechanics, lifts and transfers, as well as CPR and First Aid Courses. Students also participate in a practicum that includes an intensive 3-week clinical practice, providing the student with hands-on experience in nursing homes, group homes, hospitals and/or long term care facilities. In addition to these 3-weeks, students from the Personal Support Worker Program are also assigned weekly on-the-job sessions at nursing or group homes and health-care facilities as part of their training. The total time spent on applied practicum is approximately 6 weeks. The Canadian portion of the Program will help you to understand Canadian customs and culture well enough to run a Canadian household, as well as help you adapt smoothly to the Canadian way of life. You will learn to shop and cook appropriately as a Live-In Caregiver, learning to accommodate the nutritional and dietary requirements of your client. We will also help you understand the terms and conditions of employment as well as the rights you have as a Live-In Caregiver in Canada. After 12 months of classroom study, the students receive 6 months of work experience. This is a key component to the program as it will enable you take what you have learned in the classroom and actually apply it in a practical, hands-on experience. This combination will give you the expertise necessary to succeed in your career as a Live-In Caregiver.
Admission Requirements · Be a minimum of 19 years of age · Hold a post-secondary education degree or diploma · Demonstrate an ability to write and speak English through a personal interview with the CCS’s Admissions Department · Pass the personal interview with the CCS’s Admissions Department · Provide proof of recently obtained TB test showing a negative result Provide a copy of your clear Criminal Record Check from your country of residence If you are an International Student, you must also qualify for a Student Visa. Alternatively, you can consult your country’s Canadian Consulate or Embassy. Search for one in your area by visiting Citizen and Immigration Canada. Program Length and Fees Fees may be paid by Visa, cash, money order, certified cheque or wire transfer, Fees are subject to change.
